How to make original homemade puzzles

The value of creating something with your hands is very high, and if what you create will fill your loved ones with special moments, it becomes even more valuable. That is the case of homemade puzzles, an economical and fun option that can be fully customized and generate moments of happiness that transcend.

Making homemade puzzles is very simple, there are a wide variety of possibilities that you can develop depending on the materials you have and who the puzzle is for.

The main materials you can use are cardboard, wood and foam. Here's how you can make original and eye-catching homemade puzzles with very few resources:

Homemade cardboard puzzles

The puzzles with a cardboard base are the most popular and easiest to make. One of the great advantages is that it is possible to make them with everyday household materials, such as cereal boxes. In this way you will create an object of great sentimental value while protecting the environment and saving money.

To make this type of puzzle it is necessary to have a cardboard for the base. Keep in mind that the thicker this cardboard is, the more effective and durable the final result will be.

Art Options

For the art of the puzzle you can use various methods: from painting it by hand to using a special photograph. Here are some suggested options:

Paint it by hand

You can paint the entire surface of the base with white paint and draw some design on the cardboard. This option is ideal for awakening creativity and working fine motor skills in both children and adults.

Use an eye-catching image

You can also choose a representative image or photograph that is the same size as the cardboard surface and print it. Printing can be done on bond paper, photo paper or recycled paper.

Once the motif is printed, stick it to the cardboard base with a strong glue, taking care that the image is well stretched and that there are no air pockets.

After having glued the image to the base, cover it with a thin layer of varnish, this way you will protect it from rubbing and it will adhere well to the cardboard.

Choose a fabric with printed motifs

Follow the same steps described in the previous point but, instead of using a print, use a fabric with printed patterns that have some correlation with each other.

Shapes and styles

Once you have the art installed on the base, you just have to turn the puzzle over and mark on the back the assemblies that will join the pieces. Cut the pieces with scissors or a cutter, always being very careful.

The shape of the piece assemblies can be as original as you want: you can base it on the common shape of puzzles, you can cut geometric figures or you can make more personalized designs.

Of course, keep in mind that it is important that the assemblies fit together harmoniously; The most important thing about the puzzle is that it is resistant and can be attached correctly.

Homemade wooden puzzles

Wood is a great material to create puzzles, mainly because it is very resistant. You can create homemade wooden puzzles very easily and without the use of tools. Here are the simplest and most original options:

Puzzles with wooden cubes

In sawmills there are usually scraps of wood discarded from previous work. You can go to one of these establishments and ask if among the discarded materials they have small wooden cubes that you can give a new life to

Get four cubes and sand their faces and edges, to remove any splinters that could be harmful. Then take sheets of paper and create four designs that are the size of all four cubes together (placing two on top and two on bottom).

Take one of the designs and cut it so that each cube has a quarter of the image. Stick each piece with a resistant adhesive and at the end add a layer of varnish for a neater finish.

Follow the same procedure with the other 3 designs, so that all the faces of the cube are covered with each drawing.

Puzzles with popsicles

This type of puzzle is ideal for young children. Take a piece of masking tape and place it on your work surface with the sticky side facing up.

Gather five or more popsicles and place them side by side on the tape so they stick together and don't move easily.

Once you have the sticks together and firm, create the design that you like the most covering the entire surface. When you have finished with the art, separate the sticks from the adhesive and use a damp cloth to clean the excess glue that has remained on the reverse.

Homemade puzzles with foami

The foami puzzles have the advantage of being ideal for small children thanks to the softness and resistance of the material. Take into account that to create these puzzles it is important that the base foami has a thickness of at least 3 millimeters, so that the pieces can be firmly assembled.

The procedure for making puzzles from foami is similar to the one we use to create puzzles from cardboard, only instead of painting the art or using a printed image, you can use gluing pieces to the base and thus add texture to the final result.

For example, on the foam base you can create the shape of a cat using a thinner layer of foam for the body, some buttons for the eyes and some thick threads for the whiskers.

Once you have the art ready, turn the puzzle over and use a pencil to mark the puzzle pieces. Cut them with scissors or a cutter very carefully and precisely, and enjoy your personalized homemade puzzle.
