Rosalind Franklin: Her Story and Discoveries

History has relegated the figure of women to the background: there are hardly any famous women writers until the 19th century, few have been political pioneers and very few names appear on the list of great thinkers.

The world of science has not been particularly fair to them either: there are many who have carried out essential work to achieve great scientific advances, but they have been left in the shadow of their husbands or colleagues .

Fortunately, this has changed in recent years and names such as Rosalind Franklin, Teresa de Jesús, Mileva Maric or Marie Curie have gradually taken on their role of total relevance in the progress of our civilization.

For example, Rosalind Franklin has totally important discoveries from the point of view of medicine and the development of studies related to DNA and science genetics.

Something that very few people know, since the great discoverers of DNA for most of society are, you can imagine, two men: James Watson and Francis Crick.

But just by scratching the surface of this scientific field a little, it is understood that without Rosalind Franklin, DNA would still be a mystery, a myth, something that you wouldn't even know if it exists.

British born in 1920, Rosalind Franklin was an expert in chemistry and crystallography.

She grew up in a family of Jewish origin and received a very severe education, in which she excelled in all sports and subjects.

Since she was very young she showed great aptitude for systematization and organization of ideas, so at the age of 18 she was accepted to university and received a scholarship to continue her studies, although she and her father decided to donate that amount to the young refugee students as a result of the disasters of World War II.

This gesture demonstrates the kindness and generosity of Rosalind Franklin, who upon finishing her university studies, and thanks to her brilliant career, managed to combine different scholarships to work in chemistry laboratories as a researcher in various projects.

Great milestones mark the academic and scientific career of Franklin, who combined her work with an important union activity and in defense of women's rights.

Also recognized for her great importance within the suffrage movement for women's right to vote, Rosalind Franklin, who in 1956, suffering from a problem of stomach, was diagnosed with the presence of several tumors in her abdominal cavity. She died on April 16, 1958.

Agnostic, great preserver of Jewish traditions, inveterate traveler, curious, nature lover, passionate about politics and social progress, history owes Rosalind Franklin the development of several studies of total relevance for the evolution of our world. The first to sequence the DNA genome were scientists Francis Crick and James Watson.They were able to formulate a very successful hypothesis about what the structure that is in all the organs, molecules and cells of the human body would be like

Thanks to this they were awarded the Nobel Prize and their names became engraved in stone for history.

And what does Rosalind Franklin and her discoveries have to do with this? That's the crux of the matter! And it is that Crick and Watson were based on a work of the scientist to carry out their discovery.

Rosalind Franklin, an expert in X-ray crystallography, was experimenting with her materials to photograph the DNA molecule, something that she achieved in the now, fortunately, famous 'PHOTO 51'. From that image, the scientist made measurements and provided data that her colleagues later took advantage of.

The situation is not without controversy, since the official story tells how a laboratory colleague of Rosalind Franklin provided the data of his discoveries to Watson, and that this was vital so that he, along with Crick, could formalize their proposal. The rest is history.

But the work of Rosalind Franklin does not end there. She is also responsible for the evolution in great steps of work to understand and combat polio and the tobacco mosaic virus, among other great feats. And despite everything, Rosalind Franklin never had the Nobel Prize.

Without a doubt, Rosalind Franklin has a wonderful, inspiring and brave biography that should be remembered and valued whenever possible. She is one of those women who have paved the way and shown that despite all the circumstances against her, the desired goal can be achieved..
