What is a telescope?

To know how a telescope works, the first thing we must understand is what it is. A telescope is basically an object that we use to see things that are very far away, in this case the stars.

How does a telescope work?

In order to understand how a telescope works, the first thing we must take into account is how the human eye works. To begin with, the eye is made up of two parts, the pupil, which functions as a kind of lens, and the retina, which is precisely where the light that is perceived is reflected.

At the moment in which we see an object from afar, that light that is perceived is quite scarce, so the pupil only manages to reflect a small image in the area of ​​the retina. The closer the object is, the more light it will emit.

The job of the telescope is to use that lens to capture a larger amount of light, which is then focused and ultimately transmitted to the eye so that objects at a considerable distance are visible.

This is the basic way the telescope works. However, there are several types of telescope with some differences in terms of how they work.

Types of telescopes

There are currently two types of telescopes, the refractor and the reflector:


In the case of the refracting telescope, it uses two lenses to focus light. The first lens has a convex shape, which is responsible for refracting light and capturing light rays parallel to an object. This allows convergence to take place at a single point, even though the image is very small.

On the other hand, the second lens is the area where we can see how the object becomes bigger and brighter, which means that the size will be much larger and much clearer.


The reflecting telescope does not use lenses, but mirrors. The mirrors are responsible for focusing the light on a single point and do not refract the light, but reflect it. The biggest problem with this type of telescope is its size, since they are usually too large to have at home or to be able to transport it.


These are the basic telescopes that can be used. There are others, but their use is usually much more professional since they offer greater power that is not needed at the user level.
