On this day (January 8), 1856, Dr. John Veatch discovers borax in California, USA
John Allen Veatch was born on March 5, 1808 and was a surgeon, surveyor and scientist, was known for his discovery of large deposits of borax in Tuscan Springs, California.
Borax , also known as sodium borate , sodium tetraborate or disodium tetraborate, is an important compound of boron , a mineral, and a salt of boric acid.
Powdered borax is white in color and consists of soft, colorless crystals that dissolve in water. A series of closely related minerals or chemical compounds that differ in their content of crystalline water are called borax, and the word is generally used to refer to octahydrate.
Commercially sold borax is partially dehydrated. Borax is a component of many detergents, cosmetics, and enamel polishes. It is used to make buffer solutions in biochemistry, as a fire retardant, as an antifungal compound, in the manufacture of fiberglass, as a flux in metallurgy, neutron capture shields for radioactive sources, a texturizing agent in cooking, as a crosslinking agent in Slime, as an alkali in photographic developers and as a precursor to other boron compounds. It is also useful as an insecticide in conjunction with boric acid.
As a curiosity, borax was first discovered in the beds of dry lakes in Tibet and was imported via the Silk Road to the Arabian Peninsula in the 8th century AD

- You look very happy
- yes!
- why?
- because I discovered borax
- about time
- how is it about time?
- about time you put your house in order
- I don't understand
- well sure that borax was under a sheet
- how?
- and by folding the sheet, you have discovered borax
- what?
- because that borax would be covered by the savannah
- that was not the case
- with a tidy house you will live better
- you've already taken my smile away, ashen
