On this day (July 21), 1983, at the Vostok Antarctic station, the lowest temperature ever reached on our planet is recorded, 89.2 º C below zero (-128.6 degrees Fahrenheit )
The Russian Vostok scientific station has measured the temperature in the upper part of Antarctica since 1958. The average temperature in that area is 66 degrees below zero during the winter.
An investigation has revealed the causes that led to record the lowest temperature in history, -89.2º, reached in Antarctica in July 1983, due to effect of a current of cold air which settled on the Antarctic plateau without giving way to warmer air from lower latitudes.
The research, carried out by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), indicates that that record temperature was 30º lower than the average of 66º below zero that prevails in that area in the winter of the southern hemisphere.
The mass of cold air coming from the Antarctic Ocean settled for ten days over the upper part of the Antarctic plateau, where the Russian Vostok scientific station is located, which recorded this record and which has been measuring temperatures in the region since 1958.

The current prevented warmer air masses from lower latitudes from reaching this area, which isolated the station and created the conditions for such extreme temperatures.

In addition, the absence of clouds and a layer of tiny ice particles suspended in the air -a phenomenon known as diamond dust- contributed to heat from the surface being lost to space.

How curious to comment that -96º could be reached if a period of isolation caused by cold currents similar to the one that devastated Vostok in July 1983 were reached .

- courage, courageous
- but... but... have you seen the thermometer?
-if
- 89.2ºC below zero!
- then wrap up warm
