On this day (May 20), 2010, in the USA, Science magazine publishes that the team led by scientist and businessman Craig Venter has achieved the creation of the first synthetic cell.
Sciencemagazine was founded in 1880, it is the peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and one of the world's leading academic journals. Currently its estimated audience is 570,400 people.
John Craig Venter was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States on October 14, 1946 and is an American biologist and businessman. He was the founding chairman of Celera Genomics, becoming famous by starting his own Human Genome Project in 1999.
On May 20, 2010, the journal Science publishes a historic story: Venter and his team managed to create a bacterial cell with a synthetic or artificial genome. To do this, they created a totally artificial genome in a laboratory.
Venter has patented the first human-created life form, possibly named Mycoplasma laboratorium. This line of research is expected to lead to the development of bacteria manipulated to generate specific reactions that allow, among other things, to produce fuels or drugs, or help combat climate change.
Some researchers, although they highlight the scientific achievement, do not agree that it is possible to speak of an artificial life form, since the bacterium in which the synthetic DNA was inserted was completely natural.
This achievement may have results in the investigation of bacteria related to clean fuels, the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or the manufacture of vaccines. Legal regulations are now being called for a powerful technique with many possibilities, but at the same time unpredictable, even dangerous, since it could also cause problems in the environment or finally become a destructive and reckless biological weapon.

- we have created a synthetic cell!
- ha! I don't believe it!
- Well, I read the article!
- I've read it
- so what?
- I still don't believe it
- well it's true
