On this day (August 2), 1845, in Germany, the doctor Rudolf Virchow mentions his discovery of the embolism for the first time.
Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow was born on 13 October 1821 and was a German doctor, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist, writer, editor and politician. He is known as "the father of pathology modern" and as the founder of social medicine, and to his colleagues, the "Pope of Medicine".
Virchow studied medicine at Friedrich Wilhelm University with Johannes Peter Müller . He worked at the hospital Charité with Robert Froriep, whom he succeeded as prosector .
His investigation of the typhus epidemic of 1847-1848 in Upper Silesia laid the foundations for public health in Germany and prepared his political and social career.
A prolific writer, he produced more than 2,000 scientific papers. Cellular pathology (1858), considered the root of modern pathology, introduced the third dictum in cell theory : Omnis cellula e cellula ("All cells come from cells").
Virchow was the first to describe and name diseases such as leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism and thrombosis . He coined biological terms such as "chromatin", "neuroglia", "agenesis ", "parenchyma", "osteoid", "amyloid degeneration" and "spina bifida". And terms like Virchow node, Virchow-Robin spaces, Virchow-Seckel syndrome , and the Virchow triad are named after him.
As a curiosity to comment that from him, a well-known aphorism was coined: "Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing more than medicine on a large scale"

- doctor, doctor...
- tell me, sir
- I think I'm sick
- what's wrong with him?
- my head hurts
- tell me more
- I think I have too much yellow bile
- how?
- yes, the brother of my neighbor Carla told me
- And what does that brother know?
- have you read a book on Greek philosophy
- and?
-that in those books they talk about the four liquids that the human being has and one gets sick if he has too much or too little of one of them
- but sir, that's an old theory
- but the ancients knew a lot
- the ancients knew what they knew and knowledge has advanced
- won't you give me anything to reduce the yellow bile?
- then go to the doctor
- go to an ancient philosopher
